Flylady Baby Steps Day 27 - What's for Dinner?

Flylady Baby Steps Day 27 – What’s for Dinner?

Welcome to Flylady baby steps day 27 for getting your home and life in order. We’ll continue working on previous habits for our morning, afternoon, and before-bed routines.

Today, we need to add another step to our daily routine, and it’s to think about what we’re having for dinner before dinner time. This way, we can plan ahead of time, especially when we need to defrost something from the freezer.

Planning helps to get rid of the chaos that happens right around 5-6 pm. When everyone is hungry and you’re still thinking about what to cook.

Start Meal Planning!

Knowing what you’ll have for dinner is very important, but it’s hard to plan your dinners if you don’t have a plan. So, start meal planning. Flylady has a monthly focus on meal planning in November and a control journal section about meal planning.

Here are a few more reasons why you should start meal planning:

  • Save Money – Fewer chances to get take out when you have no dinner ready on time.
  • Eat Healthier – Homemade food is nutritious and delicious.
  • Less Food Waste – You buy exactly what you need for the week instead of random products that you might use.
  • Save Time – Plan once a week for the week, and you’ll have fewer trips to the grocery store.
  • Family Time – Ask your family what they want to eat for dinner and enjoy cooking together.

How I Meal Plan?

I began to meal plan when my oldest was a baby. As a result, my meal plans have changed throughout the years. It even changed earlier this year.

But our favorite meals have stayed the same. So what I recommend is to get a two or a three-inch binder and a piece of paper. Then set your timer for 15 minutes to work on your recipe binder.

On a blank piece of paper, write down your family’s favorite recipes for breakfast/brunch, lunch, dinner, dessert, etc.

Breakfast Example

  • Berry Oatmeal
  • Breakfast Sandwich
  • BLT Sandwich
  • Breakfast Burrito/Quesadilla
  • Potato and Veggie Hash/Hashbrown
  • Pancakes
  • Zucchini Fritters
  • Scrambled/Fried Eggs, Protein, and Veggies

Afterward, find your family’s favorite recipes online and print them, type up your recipes and print them, or just hand-write all of your recipes. Getting your recipes together will take a little bit of your time, but you don’t have to finish today.

You can accomplish a lot in 15 minutes, and if you work on it every day, you’ll have your very own recipe binder in no time, which will save you so much time in the future,

Now, instead of looking for your recipes online or in your cookbooks, you’ll have one place to look. On the plus side, anybody can use the binder. For example, my kids love to look through the binder for breakfast and dessert. I think the dessert section is by far their favorite.

My Recipe Binder

I love having binder dividers to separate all categories: breakfast, main meals, sides, dessert, etc.

I put all of my favorite recipes inside a plastic sheet protector. This way, I can have the recipe while I cook without having my bulky binder taking too much counter space. And if the recipe gets dirty, I can quickly wipe it clean.

If I want to try a new recipe, I put the recipe inside the side pocket of the binder. This way, I know that we haven’t tried that specific recipe, and if it’s a fail, I wouldn’t add it to our family’s favorites.

Let me know in the comments if you would like to see my step-by-step meal planning process.
